East India Company New Land Pattern Flintlock Pistol
.65 caliber. 8.875" pinned round barrel. NSN. Bright finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot carbine bore muzzleloading smoothbore flintlock military pistol with captive swivel ramrod. Lock with the East India Company's "Rampant Lion" motif and dated 1813 at the tail, showing the EIC inspection {Crown/2} below the pan. Flat EIC pattern lock in original flint with a rounded, fenced and bridled iron pan and a flat faceted reinforced cock. Barrel with London gunmaker's commercial proof marks, EIC {Crown/3} inspection and what appears to be a "*/JI" or "*/II" maker's mark. An EIC storekeeper's mark is present on the upper right wrist of the stock. An additional mark dated "1830" is present on the counterpane, along with a weak set of initials that may be "JP". The name Leigh is stamped long the right side of the pistol's grip and could indicate manufacture by long time East India Company gunmaker James Leigh, who worked circa 1792-1831 in London and contracted with the EIC from 1805-1831. A solid example of a pistol used by the famous East India Company, which at one point in time controlled the largest private army in the world, larger than most national armies of the period. {ANTIQUE}
